Wildlife & Birds
Wildlife
Sentinel has wonderful biodiversity.
Commune with African elephants, Livingstone eland, giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, blue wildebeest, greater kudu, impala, bushbuck, steenbok, grey duiker, nyala, waterbuck, black-backed jackal, spotted and brown hyena, warthog, bushpig and cliff defying klipspringers.
Smaller mammals such as chacma baboons, vervet monkeys, civets, genets, porcupines, honey badgers, antbears, bat-eared foxes and mongooses are common.
Leopards, lions, cheetahs and, occasionally, the African wild dog, may also be seen.
Nothing is choreographed or baited. What you see is nature’s gift to you.
We’ll take you scorpion hunting with UV lights, look at butterflies and beetles, introduce you to fascinating reptiles and share years of combined Bristow bush experience with you.

Birds and birding
Over 400 species of birds have been recorded on Sentinel Ranch.
A pair of good binoculars and a decent zoom camera will be your best friends.
Ostriches roam one of their last natural habitats in Southern Africa, Verreaux’s (aka black) eagles breed on the sandstone cliffs, and kori bustards – the heaviest flying bird in the world – are common year round.
Here are to be found everything from the ubiquitous hornbills (6 species), 10 species of gorgeous bee-eaters and 8 kingfishers, various vultures and kestrels and many diminutive forest and savanna birds, waders (including the massive goliath heron) and seed eaters.
Our summer specials include the Pel’s fishing owl, olive tree warbler, bateleur, martial and Verreaux’s eagles, lappet-faced and Cape vultures, ground hornbills, peregrine and lanner falcons, a deafening red-billed quelea breeding colony, 9 species of cuckoos, 8 species of storks and 10 owls.
This truly is a bird-watching paradise and one we love to share with bird lovers from across the world. Contact us with any specific species you would like to see and we’ll do our best to help you find them, although – of course – nothing is guaranteed!
